Ismalia

by Alphonsus de Guimaraens

Translation from Portuguese by Em

When Ismalia went mad,
She climbed the tower to dream…
She saw a moon in the sky,
She saw one in the sea.

Up above, the moon was bright,
Down below, she bathed in moonlight…
And in that dream she lifted
Her arms toward both, open wide.

In her madness, she wanted to fly,
So she took to tower to sing…
She yearned to climb to the sky,
She yearned to sink in the deep.

Her soul, if rising, would reach one,
If sinking, the other would claim;
And in reverie she hovered
Between heaven and ocean the same.

Then like a falling angel,
She loosed herself from the height…
Her body sank in the waters,
Her soul rose into the light.
